EDL is proud to be part of the 2024 Singapore Design Week. The event showcases the city’s vibrant creativity, drawing together design enthusiasts from all walks of life. This year, the theme “People of Design” honours everyday visionaries who, through design, make meaningful contributions to society.
The EDL Experience: Design Beyond Materials
In the spirit of making design accessible to everyone, we took participants on a journey through our gallery that went beyond materials, offering them a firsthand look at how our surfacing products can impact spaces and experiences.
Metempsychosis: A Passage Through Hidden Narratives
Hosted by The Afternaut Group, visitors were guided through the gallery in an interactive journey through an alternative dimension. Gwen Tan, Design Principal, acted as the Wayfinder sharing the concept and design behind the gallery via an imaginative skit. Â
From the moment they stepped into the space, they were greeted by a giant lampshade constructed from our Compact offcuts. The large scale of the structure evokes the whimsical feeling of Alice in Wonderland after drinking the shrinking potion – making visitors feel small and drawing them into an enchanting world. Guided by the “Wayfinder,” they embarked on a magical exploration of this imaginative realm, where each step revealed new wonders.
Creativity in Action: From Off Cuts to Masterpieces
After the tour, participants encouraged to partake in a hands-on creative exercise, crafting miniature benches using Compact offcuts. These miniature benches sparked ideas about sustainability and innovative design. Each participant’s bench design was unique, reflecting the individual creativity that “People of Design” celebrates.
Our guests were also treated to personalised door gifts that were inspired by the hanging ornaments of The Canopy. These components could be transformed into a paperweight, bookend, or coasters, illustrating how design can bring beauty and functionality to everyday objects.
